We Ain't In Kansas Anymore...
Mercy comes from an ordinary family. Most of her childhood was spent in New York. It was such a grand city. She even took her medical schooling there, but she got a new job offer that had her moving across the country to a much warmer place. It actually excited her. She loved the warm climates, as well as the ocean.
Her parents were very caring and loving people. They never made a big deal about things, which is why Mercy is such a strong person. She takes things as they come. She’s good at this, but underneath that calm exterior is a woman that has a small temper. She can stay calm in the worst situations, unless someone is threatening her than all bets are off. She does not take kindly to people threatening her nor touching her in an aggressive manner. But, even when she does sometimes blow up on aggressive people, she exudes her calm manner when she steps back. It’s even common for her to put in perspective why this person threatened her. She is easily forgiving.
When she lost her father at the age of fifteen it was such a tragic event. He was killed in a horrible car accident by a drunk driver. The news had been a devastating blow for Mercy and her mother. It took them years to overcome it. They had lost a great man, someone they held close and dear to their hearts, even to this day. Because of it Mercy never does she leave if she feels inebriated, but it doesn't mean she doesn't drink. It just means she is smart about it.
It was after her father’s death that Mercy decided to go into healthcare. She wanted to be that person that could save people. Her mother believed that Mercy dedicated herself to the medical field with such a strong desire because she wished she could have been the one to save her father. This was very true, but Mercy never expressed that feeling to anyone.
The move to San Francisco was rather easy for her. It wasn’t so easy for her mother. She didn’t like having her daughter live so far from her. She hated to leave her, but she was an adult. She couldn’t continue to hover around the birds nest. It was time to get out on her own. However, she couldn’t help but worry about her mother. They had lost Mercy’s father when she was about fifteen. It hadn’t been easy on either of them. It made her mom a little overprotective of her only daughter. Mercy knew she would visit her often, though.
Maybe she wouldn’t have gone, but she was offered a very good salary for a major hospital in San Francisco. What more could she ask for? She wouldn’t have to deal with winters any longer, but in place she would have to deal with other climate problems like forest fires and mudslides. She would get a beautiful view of the ocean. Of course, she had that in New York, but it wasn’t easily viewed with all the huge skyscrapers blocking most of it out.
She had been working for a few years before the apocalypse. When it hit, she tried to help the hospital take in people while they searched for a cure. Eventually it became too much and even the staff were becoming infected. She had to leave the premises and went to her home, staying there until she can't live without going out to search for food, which is going to be very soon.
